What is a capacitor and its classification?
A capacitor is an electronic component that stores and releases electrical charge. Its basic working principle is charging and discharging, besides rectification, oscillation, and other functions. Additionally, the structure of a capacitor is very simple, mainly consisting of two positive and negative electrodes with an insulating dielectric in between. Therefore, the type of capacitor is primarily determined by the electrodes and the insulating dielectric. Capacitors have numerous applications, mainly including the following:
1. DC blocking: its function is to prevent direct current from passing through while allowing alternating current to pass.
2. Bypassing (decoupling): providing a low-impedance path for certain parallel components in an AC circuit.
3. Coupling: serving as a connection between two circuits, allowing AC signals to pass through and be transmitted to the next stage.
4. Filtering: this is important for DIY enthusiasts; the capacitors on graphics cards mostly serve this purpose.
5. Temperature compensation: compensating for the inadequate temperature adaptability of other components to improve circuit stability.
6. Timing: used in conjunction with resistors to determine the time constant of a circuit.
7. Tuning: systematically tuning frequency-related circuits, such as in mobile phones, radios, and televisions.
8. Rectification: turning semiconductor switching elements on or off at predetermined times.
9. Energy storage: storing electrical energy for release when necessary, for example, camera flashes, heating devices, etc. (Nowadays, the energy storage capacity of some capacitors is approaching that of lithium batteries; the energy stored in one capacitor can power a mobile phone for a day.)
