The impact of declining exports has led to a drop in the shipment volume of China's home appliance market.
According to iSuppli, due to the global economic slump leading to a decline in exports, it is expected that China's major home appliance exports will decrease by 2.7% in 2009. The total shipment volume of China's major home appliances in 2009 is projected to be 177.5 million units, down from 182.4 million units in 2008. The total shipment volume represents the market trend for major home appliances such as air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, and microwave ovens. Exports are expected to drop by 8.5% compared to 2008, from 108.3 million units to 99.1 million units. Due to subsidy measures introduced by the government, China's domestic market will continue to grow, despite the global economic slowdown. China's Ministry of Finance has expanded a stimulus program that reduces the price of home appliances for rural consumers by as much as 13%. This measure has maintained a fairly rapid pace of growth in the domestic market, though not as strong as in previous years. China's large domestic equipment manufacturers dominate the major home appliance market. These companies are implementing product differentiation strategies in the domestic market, while focusing on cost leadership in the export market. Designing major home appliances with new features that appeal to consumers is a significant challenge for manufacturers. These companies are adopting vertical integration strategies to control key components and equipment, helping to reduce production costs. Many enterprises have begun outsourcing low-end products to contract manufacturers. To improve equipment utilization, major home appliance suppliers are reluctant to expand production capacity. Due to a general lack of innovation and product diversity in the non-inverter air conditioning market, China's major air conditioning companies are developing products using inverter technology. Due to higher prices, it is expected that China's inverter air conditioning market will experience only moderate growth from 2009 to 2010. Chinese domestic companies still have weak capabilities in product design and market development for inverter air conditioners. Chip suppliers need to provide total solutions for controlling variable-speed motors. The key chip used in major home appliances—the microcontroller unit (MCU)—is controlled by Japanese suppliers. By establishing close partnerships with China's ** home appliance companies, Japanese suppliers have achieved a dominant position in the MCU field. For suppliers providing semiconductors to the major home appliance industry, air conditioners remain a relatively important market. Therefore, efforts should also be stepped up to develop the aviation industry, thereby better driving the entire market.
